Chemistry is the branch of science that studies matter — what things are made of, how they are put together, what properties they have, and how they change during chemical reactions. It explores atoms, molecules, elements, compounds, and the interactions between them.
At its core, chemistry helps us understand the composition and behavior of substances, from the air we breathe and the water we drink to the materials used in medicines, plastics, and fuels. Because it explains how matter behaves at the molecular and atomic level, chemistry is often called the “central science” — connecting physical science with biology, environmental science, and engineering.
